The WhatsApp Photo Consultation: How Clinics Assess You Before You Fly

Published 2026-08-03 · No Shame Dental · Medellín, Colombia

Every Colombia dental story starts the same way: photos taken in a bathroom, sent from a couch, answered with a plan. Here's exactly how that process works — and how to do it well.

Why remote assessment changed everything

The old model demanded the scariest step first: walk into an office, sit in the chair, be examined by a stranger — all before knowing what anything would cost. The remote model inverts it. The assessment happens over WhatsApp, asynchronously, privately; the reveal moment you've dreaded for years takes place with an ocean of distance and a written response. By the time anyone examines you in person (what that visit is like), the plan and price already exist. For long-avoiders, this inversion is the single biggest reason the Colombia path works where years of “I should call a dentist” didn't.

What to actually send: the five-photo set

Clinics work from a standard set. Bathroom mirror, phone flash on, and honestly — done in two minutes:

  1. Front, teeth together: bite closed, lips pulled back in a wide grimace-smile showing upper and lower teeth;
  2. Front, mouth open: showing biting surfaces top and bottom as best you can;
  3. Left side, teeth together — cheek pulled back with a finger;
  4. Right side, teeth together — same;
  5. Anything specific: a close-up of the tooth, gap, or area that worries you most.

Add any x-rays or dental records you have from any point in history — useful but absolutely not required. Missing photos or blurry angles? Send what you can; coordinators guide retakes kindly. Nobody is grading your photography or your enamel.

The message itself (a template you can steal)

“Hi — I haven't had dental care in [years]. I have [broken/missing/painful teeth — whatever's true, in plain words]. I'm [anxious about dental work / interested in sedation / working within a budget — anything relevant]. I'd like to know what treatment would look like and roughly what it would cost. Photos attached.”

That's a complete, professional-grade consultation request. Spelling doesn't matter. Dental vocabulary doesn't matter. Mentioning anxiety up front genuinely helps — it shapes the plan from the first draft (how sedation gets built in).

Thirty seconds of awkward bathroom photos versus another year of wondering. That's the actual exchange rate.

What comes back, and when

Within a few days, typically: a preliminary read of your situation in plain language, a proposed treatment approach (often with options at different levels — the save-vs-replace forks explained across our treatment guides), a written price range per the typical 2026 ranges you've seen on this site, and proposed trip structure — how many days, one trip or two (when it's two). Final numbers firm up after in-person imaging, but established clinics' remote estimates land close — their business depends on quotes that survive the first x-ray.

Honest limits of photo assessment

Photos can't see under gums or inside bone — so gum disease severity and implant candidacy get confirmed by imaging on arrival, and plans carry an honest “pending CT” note where relevant. Reputable clinics flag uncertainty rather than papering over it; a remote quote with zero caveats on a complex case is actually the suspicious version (more vetting signals in the safety guide). Significant plan changes after imaging get discussed with you before anything proceeds.

Your questions to ask them

The remote exchange is also your audition of the clinic. Ask: which implant brand? Who performs surgery and what's their specialty? What does the warranty cover (what good coverage looks like)? How is payment staged (what's normal)? Specific, prompt, documented answers are the tell of a clinic worth flying to.

The couch is the starting line

No appointment, no phone call, no commitment — a message and five photos, answered with the first concrete plan your mouth has had in years. It's the smallest step in the whole journey, and it's the one that makes every other step real.

The hardest part is the first message. Send it anyway.
