Who pays for what

Your coverage decides where to start

Four situations, each with its source linked. Find yours.

MedicaidIt depends on your state

There’s no federal minimum for adult dental in Medicaid (Medicaid.gov). In 2025, 38 states and DC had enhanced adult dental benefits, 6 states covered emergencies only or nothing, and Alabama covered no adult dental at all (ADA). Implants are generally not covered, except in limited medically necessary cases (healthinsurance.org). Call the member number on your card to find out what yours pays for.

MedicareMostly no dental

In most cases Medicare doesn’t cover routine cleanings, fillings, extractions, dentures or implants (Medicare.gov). Some Medicare Advantage plans add dental benefits, usually with a yearly limit. What those plans actually pay.

VeteransOnly some qualify

Of the nearly 9 million veterans enrolled in VA health care, about 26% are eligible for VA dental care, according to the VA (VA). Check where you stand in seven questions.

No insuranceSliding fees exist

Federally funded health centers adjust fees to your income and family size, and many have dentists (HRSA). Dental schools treat patients at reduced cost (NIDCR).

Medicaid can’t pay a dentist outside the US (CMS), and Medicare usually doesn’t cover care abroad either. If you go to Colombia, you pay the clinic yourself.

Try these first

Low-cost options at home

None of these need a referral or an explanation of how long it’s been.

  • Call the member number on your Medicaid or Medicare Advantage card and ask what dental work is covered.
  • Find a community health center with a dentist: HRSA’s health center finder.
  • Find a dental school clinic near you: the ADA’s program search.
  • Ask any dentist for a written treatment plan and price before you agree to anything.

When it’s bigger work

Implants, full arches and full-mouth work are where costs add up and coverage runs out. If that’s you, it’s worth comparing a written quote from abroad alongside the options at home.

Ways to pay are in financing dental work and paying for dental work abroad.

Andy, who runs No Shame Dental, has been through dental implant treatment himself. Ask him about it on WhatsApp.

Honest answers

The money questions

Asked and answered, no sugarcoating.

Will Medicaid or Medicare pay for dental work in Colombia?

No. Federal law bars Medicaid from paying providers outside the US (CMS), and Medicare usually doesn't cover care outside the US (Medicare.gov).

Is it embarrassing to ask a dental school or health center for help?

No. That's what they're there for. Dental school clinics treat patients at reduced cost, and health centers adjust their fees to your income.

Do I need to know what treatment I need before I ask?

No. Send what you have: photos, old X-rays, or a few lines about what hurts or what's missing. A dentist decides what they need to see next.

How does No Shame Dental make money?

A provider may pay us a referral fee if you book treatment with a clinic we introduced. Asking a question costs you nothing.
